Meet Scout Data Advisors founder, John Lee

John Lee

With a unique set of experiences and career accomplishments, John stands as one of the leading data innovators and strategists in the world. His passion for data and its undiscovered potential began as a university student, where he penned his senior thesis, “Neural Networks and Parallel Distributed Processing in Artificial Intelligence” in 1995.

His professional career has spanned nearly 30 years across multiple sectors enabling Fortune 1000 companies to deliver superior results through advertising, marketing and digital experience. John’s unique area of expertise is in the development and monetization of audience-based planning, activation, and measurement platforms that work seamlessly across linear and digital media. He served as the “founder”, chief architect, and business owner of such platforms supporting billions in media investment and hundreds of millions in direct revenue at both the holding company and media owner levels during his tenure at companies such as Dentsu and NBCUniversal.

 

John has over 20 years of experience leading scaled strategy, product, product marketing, technology, data science, and measurement teams on both the buy and sell side and is a leader who can help businesses “see around corners” on how data will drive differentiation as regulation and technology evolves. John has most recently focused on what he believes will be the next big leap for the media industry: “ID-less” transactions between buyers and publishers underpinned by first-party data and generative AI without the movement of data.

 

John and his family live in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

Drove growth of Merkle as CRM leader by pivoting value proposition from direct mail to cross-channel, offline-online orchestration driving hundreds of millions in new business

Played critical role in the establishment and ultimate expansion of Merkle as the largest independent digital performance media agency in the world

Invented and led Merkle’s M1 platform, the industry’s first media planning and activation platform based on census-level offline data/identity, now the standard model across the industry

Launched Merkury, Merkle’s stand-alone identity service which could be licensed independent of media enabling clients to build their own first-party graphs

Set vision and delivered NBCUnified, NBCU’s market-leading first-party identity, data, and analytics platform which is the backbone of NBCU’s $2B advanced audience business

2023

Consolidated NBCU’s legacy ad measurement, research, and insights teams into a modern, integrated “Data, Measurement, and Insights” organization built on first-party data and moving away from antiquated panels and research methods

2024

Invented and launched beta for NBCUnified GenAI which links consumer emotional drivers to second-by-second content meta-data and the NUID to drive next generation performance optimization and lift
